Pencil cactus (Euphorbia tirucalli)
The plant shows yellowish coloration and excessive lignification at its base and center, indicating a decline due to maintenance issues. It is not a pathogenic disease, but a symptom of environmental stress. This typically occurs when the substrate has been depleted of nutrients after years in the same pot or due to irregular watering that causes the death of older stems. Nitrogen deficiency is often the primary cause of the pale tone in its branches.
Cut off fully brown and dry stems from the base with disinfected scissors.
Wear rubber gloves and protective goggles to avoid contact with toxic latex.
If the substrate is excessively dry and hard, partially submerge the pot in water for 15 minutes.
Apply a liquid cactus fertilizer rich in potassium to correct the overall yellowish tone.
Ensure it receives plenty of light, but avoid sudden temperature changes or drafts.
Scarce, only when substrate is dry (every 15-20 days).
Full sun or very bright filtered light (minimum 6 hours).
Warm, avoid frost and temperatures below 10°C.
Cactus mix with excellent drainage (sand, perlite, peat).
Diluted succulent fertilizer once a month in spring.
